Performing Under Pressure? Strength + Vulnerability = Resilience
Just in these last 2 weeks I have received an incredible dose of encouragement and good feels by watching 3 NZ documentaries. Each doco has showcased that being strong means being vulnerable too and that if you are just strong you may well buckle under the pressure that creates. Strength alone does not cultivate resilience. Whereas if you are strong AND vulnerable, not only will you be more likely to soar and build resilience but also that you will lead others by example and bravely show that it’s OK to not be OK.
The docos I mention here are Matt Chilsolms “Man Enough”, TV3’s “Match Fit” and the Sunday programme which previewed the hotly anticipated doco on our latest homegrown music phenomenon Six60’s “When The Lights Go Out”.
The recurring theme throughout all 3 programmes was that reaching out, being vulnerable and talking about your feelings in regard to any dark hole you may fall into is the best way to build your step ladder back outta there!
I was very impressed by Gilbert Enoka ONZM who was featured on the Sunday programme. He is an impressive mental skills coach and has helped Six60 with the same methodology that he has used on the All Blacks. I love the part of his philosophy that states professionals (he talks sportspeople) who have a huge sense of ambition and focus can suffer an intense sense of disappointment. I agree and believe this presents as part of the high achieving syndrome. I bump up against it a great deal in my practice.
If you haven’t had the chance to watch any or all of these docos, I highly recommend them. They each gave me a great deal of hope and joy and definitely honed my focus once more on ways to help build resilience by embracing vulnerability. There are gems in all of these programmes that many of us could benefit from. One of my take aways was how interesting it is observing what is going on around people when their smiles come out versus the sad faces. Go take a look…what do you notice…can you relate?
